I am going back to college in a week and can't wait! I had my induction day last Wednesday and I got to meet everyone in my class, it was good to see some old faces. There was alot of new faces too! We got given our timetable, new sketchbook, a long list of materials to buy and an introductory brief. They want us to do some drawings from memory. I've done that before and it's actually really difficult. I bought a new moleskine sketchbook for the year. I have not been doing much drawing lately but I'm hoping I will feel more inspired when college starts! I have started a painting today, I am going to try and get a painting in to an exhibition in October, it would be so cool if I got a painting on display! I have a month til the deadline! My cat enjoys lounging in my bed when I'm not in it.
Recently I completed a short course on children's book illustration. It was great to stretch my creative side and be in that sort of environment again. It was interesting to get an insight in to the industry of book illustration and get lots of tips and advice. Everybody in the class had such different styles, it was very inspiring.
We were given the task of finding a children's book, typing up the text and swapping with each other in class. This was a good idea because we were not influenced by the original illustrations. I created a double page spread from the book I was given. The book is about a young girl called Nora who is very badly behaved at home. Turns out the character Nora was actually a mouse! In hind sight I kind of wish I made the characters animals. I think my final piece is quite boring. Although my character development has improved. I used watercolours, pencils and ink for the final piece.
I always use my Windsor and Newton watercolour palette. I have had t…
Some drawings I have done recently with colour pencils. I have been looking at a lot of Sylvia Ji's art work lately which is incredible! I was trying to create the kind of alluring look she has in her paintings of girls and I stuck with the Mexican day of the dead theme.
I am really excited about going to Amsterdam tomorrow, I plan to do a blog post on my trip and I hope I can get some drawings done when I'm there! :)
After saying I was going to stay in last night I ended up in the Cathouse! I didn't feel like wearing my cheerleader costume again so I put on a little dress with a petticoat underneath, and did some 'zombie doll' type makeup. It was good fun I'm actually glad I went.
I'm planning on doing some comic noir style drawings for my current college project. I have to design a book cover for The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler. We have been asked to come up with something original and give a new take on it, as it has been illustrated so many times already. I am still learning how to draw comic book style, these are some quick sketches of detective Philip Marlowe.
Here are some examples of comic noir style. I think this style would be fitting for the book cover because it is a more modern take and may appeal more to younger people.
